After attending the knife show yesterday, we drove to Chicago to do some shopping Saturday afternoon/evening, and meet Chad for lunch today. We looked out of our Chicago hotel room this morning (large pix on lower left) to discover that Chicago was getting hammered with 4-8 inches of heavy, wet snow!!! Because the roads in town were not plowed, and we could not read any of the street signs, we decided not to make the hour drive into downtown Chicago (sorry, son!) and instead tried to navigate ourselves back out of Chicago and back home...as best we could! Wish we had LOLA with us Ha! (Mom, LOLA is a GPS navigator... and don't forget you can click on the pix to enlarge it, and then hit the back arrow to return to the blog)!!!

DH and I went to the Annual Badger Knife Show in Janesville, WI today (...DH collects Spyderco knives). The alligator in the center photo is named Elvis and he held the "Knife of the Hour" that was on special/sale at that particular table. There were 174 tables total, selling mostly custom-made knives. Some factory-made knives and used/antiques, as well as knife making supplies were also for sale . We heard rumors that there are well over 100 knife makers/dealers on a waiting list to get a table in this huge, well-known knife show.

I finished making my first sock puppet (a snake) today, and while trying to take pictures of it for the blog, my black cat kept jumping up and attacking the puppet!!! She would not stop!!! She was relentless!!! I finally had to throw her outside to finish taking pictures... hilarious!

Tried the Pad Thai for lunch today at the newly opened SensAsian restaurant (Chinese & Thai cuisine). Mmmmm...

Last night was a HUGE blast from the past...
I attended a "Beatles" concert!!! If you've never been to see "The Beatles," this group (RAIN) is the next best thing... crazy awesome!!!!

Today my high school sweetheart and I celebrated our 35th wedding anniversary with a movie (The Watchmen) and a dessert at the Symposium. Here's to 35 more years, sweetie!

This is my kitty's absolute favorite place to play and just hang out! She loves to sit inside her "den." We have a game that we play... she sits inside... I throw her toys on top of the box... and she pushes them off the top of the box! I tire of playing the game long before she does! She always makes me laugh. Pets are such a blessing!

My current read... it is fascinating!
(DD read it this past week over Spring Break for one of her Pharmacy classes and highly recommended it!)

Saturday, March 21, 2009

DD has been home on spring break this past week and has accompanied me on my daily walks. Today we travelled this path to a quarry, and found this small mitten on the path...someone has a cold hand.

3-20-09~1st Day of Spring

Today is the first day of Spring and temps soared to a balmy 36*F so we let the cat out to play and she came home with her trophy in about 5 minutes! Ewww...

I must admit, she is a good little hunter!

Was out and about running errands today and saw this...
which brought you to mind, Steve!

Sticks and stones...

Happy St. Patrick's Day!
Abandoning the treadmill at the gym for my daily walk... today's warmer temps coaxed me outside for a stroll along Duck Creek, my favorite place to walk! It refreshes my body AND spirit!

A candy wrapper dropped while walking… an empty water bottle discarded while biking… a soda can thrown from a car window while driving…Litter… it is one of my huge pet peeves!!! It makes me so sad… and angry. I took these photos along the country road leading to my house today. When did our roadways and waterways become the city dump?!?!? When I was growing up, we were taught not to litter. Even the smallest piece of cellophane that unwrapped a new pack of gum went into the ash tray or trash bag in the car, to be taken home and disposed of properly. Today’s kids (and some adults!) will toss just about anything… anywhere! Littering is so disrespectful of other people’s property and of our planet earth! Argh!!!!! Sorry, I’ll get off my soap box now… and go pick up some litter… and try to leave the world a better place.

Lots of places around town are celebrating St. Patrick's Day this weekend, and we joined in the fun by attending a concert by Craicmore ( http://www.craicmore.com/ ) ( http://www.myspace.com/craicmore ) ( and my favorite... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FmBR9n3a-jk ), a group of Irish musicians who have been artists in residence here in the area for the past week, giving workshops at 17 area schools and teaching over 5,000 children!!! This concert was their final hooray before heading back home to CA. They were AWESOME! Wish my BFF lived closer so she and her DH could have joined us!

Someone had fun! I love driving by this business... the colors in these murals always catch my eye! Some day I will actually have to stop in and see what the business is... I'm guessing it has something to do with art... what do you think?!?!?

On our way to the gym for our morning workout, I spotted several hot air balloons (not a common sight around here!) so DH was a good sport and turned around and drove back home (about 2 blocks) so I could grab my camera and take a few snapshots of these balloons landing in nearby cornfields. It was a thrill to see them fly and watch them land and take off again! It reminded me of the Hot Air Balloon ride I took in Vail, CO years ago! (Don't forget you can left click on the picture to enlarge it, and then click on the back arrow to return to the blog!)

Today we braved the 9*F temps (and -10*F Wind Chill) to have lunch at our favorite deli in town! They make THE BEST sandwiches, hands down, of all the restaurants we have ever tried... ever... anywhere! Although the place is kind of a dive (run by two brothers... the place could use a woman's touch!), the food is fantabulous and reasonably priced, and they are always busy!!!

Last month's full moon vs. this morning's full moon... Look how far the moon has moved south in 28 days! The first two photos were taken from the same spot, the first one is just zoomed in more. It is clear and COLD today... 16*F with a wind chill of -8*F! BRRRRR! It was all I could do to go outside and brave the ice (third photo) and go to breakfast with the girls this morning! Hope your weather is more temperate! (Don't forget that you can single left click on the photo to enlarge it, then click on the back arrow to return to the blog!)

My excitement for the day... my annual dental check-up and cleaning with my favorite dental hygienist, Amy. She was a great sport for letting me take pictures during my appointment for this blog! Thanks, Amy! (Don't forget that you can click on the picture above to enlarge it, then hit the back arrow to return to the blog!)

Ya gotta love the Internet!!! I am teaching myself to knit a baby bootie on two circular needles at the same time... thanks to info and videos on the Internet. I even got the pattern free on the Internet! This one and its partner (along with a blanket and hat) are going to a friend in Cincinnati, whose baby is due May 27. Did I mention that purple is my favorite color?

You know how when you enter a Borders Book Store, their lobby is full of things they are practically giving away? I saw this box in amongst the children's books and could not leave it there! I remember with such fondness the puppet show/children's sermons we had at our church in Missouri, and thought maybe after I finish my current knitting and crocheting projects, I could create some of these sock puppets for Vacation Bible School, Children's sermons, and... playing with grandkids someday?!?!? ~Too cute!!!

This morning the fam and I woke up to a breakfast of crock-pot oatmeal.
I love this Overnight Crock-Pot Oatmeal recipe:
In a lined crock-pot, combine
1 c. steel cut oats
1/2 c. barley (not quick cooking, but regular)
1 tsp. cinnamon
1/4 tsp. ginger
1/4 tsp. salt
3 c. water
1 c. apple juice
cover and cook overnight on LOW setting.
Serve with brown sugar, nuts, chopped apples, milk, honey, or any other topping you like. Enjoy! Mmmmm.

Our dear daughter came home from graduate school (Pharmacy) for the weekend and showed us these capsules she made/compounded this past week. Won't be long and we will be able to say that our daughter is a drug dealer! :-)

Driving through eastern Iowa on our way back home from Nebraska, we drove past a huge "wind farm" with hundreds of wind turbines! We also saw many, many, many blackened/burned fields (anyone know WHY the farmers do this?), so it looks like the farmers are getting ready for planting season! YAY! I am soooooo ready for Spring!!!
(You can click on the picture to enlarge it, then hit the back arrow to return to the blog.)

My mom's computer went kaput about a month ago, and she loves e-mailing her brothers, sisters, friends, children, and grandchildren, so today DH and I drove over to her house (720 miles total) and got her back on-line with a different computer, took her off of JUNO dial-up, and hooked her up to DSL. I love the way my mom embraces new technology and isn't afraid to learn and try new things! So here is a pix of me helping my mom navigate the internet. She actually taught me a few computer things I didn't know! Love you, Mom!!! Enjoy!

Tuesday, March 3, 2009

I start each morning with a cup of hot tea combined with the juice of one lemon, and for my three winters in Iowa, I have never gotten a single cold or the flu... so I consider this my magic elixir!

So many pretty yarns...
So little time!!!
I'm starting another project today for a baby due in late May!
