9-30-2013 Lost Three Days

Today,
after 3 days of knitting,
I finished the torso for a knitted doll
that I am making via a "Mystery Knit-a-Long..."
only to have 3 of the final 6 stitches drop off the needle!
I spent half an hour trying to pick up the 3 dropped stitches
...to no avail.
The yarn is just too fuzzy (Red Heart Buttercup).
So, I decided to just frog it (rip it all out)
and start again from the beginning.

During the process of ripping it out,
my hand happened to catch the straw in my iced coffee
that was sitting nearby on the table
and proceeded to knock over the coffee
onto the frogged yarn:
At this point, I was so frustrated from losing 3 days of work
and from ruining the yarn with coffee stains
that I used what was still knitted (in Lower Left of photo)
as a washcloth to mop up the coffee spill
and then threw the entire mess into the garbage can.

After venting my despair on the MKAL forum,
one kind soul said that coffees and teas
very seldom leave stains on acrylic yarns
if you rinse them out while they are still wet.
So, I decided to give it a try!
I gave the knitted portion (left)
and the frogged yarn (right)
a good soaking in some OXYclean and water
and after several minutes
all the coffee came out!

Then I squeezed out as much of the water as I could
and laid it outside in the sun and breezes to dry.

After it was completely dry
I finished ripping out the rest of the knitting
and then re-wound the yarn into a new ball.
Now I'm ready to begin again!
Wish me better luck next time!

I guess my head will have to wait another week
for her torso and arms:

9-28-2013 Stone's Apple Orchard

After a hay ride through the apple orchard
the family went to check out the farm animals:
chickens, llamas, goats and cattle.

We were so blessed
to spend this beautiful sunny morning
together with our loved ones!

9-27-2013 Popsicles

My GD eats popsicles
like they are going out of style...
so we had to make some more today:
Greek yogurt,
frozen cherries,
and a spoonful of homemade strawberry freezer jam.
Mmmmm...

9-26-2013 New Legos

Saw some of these in Chicago
this past weekend
and thought we'd pick some up for our GD.
She loves them!

Progress on Doll head
for a Mystery Knit-a-Long.

9-24-2013 Happy Birthday D-I-L

Happy Birthday!

So glad you are part of our family.  :*)

9-23-2013 Man Cave

DH has refinished the basements
of every house (4) we have lived in.
We've lived in this house (#5) for 7 years now
and he's decided it's time to move the
woodworking shop from the garage to the basement...
which I am super happy about
because now he can do his woodworking year round!!!

9-22-2013 Happy Birthday D-I-L

Our wonderful daughter-in-law
celebrates her birthday this coming week
so DH & I drove to Chicago today
and took her out for lunch
to celebrate!
Our 14 month old GS fell asleep in the car
on the way to the restaurant...

...but was WIDE  AWAKE
when his food showed up at the table!

After lunch, we spent the afternoon
at this lovely park
feeding the ducks and geese
and walking the trails around the river and falls.

Thanks so much for taking time
from your busy schedules and lives
to share the day with us!
It was soooo wonderful to see you all.
And again, Happy Birthday, D-I-L!!!

9-21-2013 A Head and Some Ouzo

Finished part 1 of my
Mystery Knit-a-Long:
the head.
Judging from the size of the head,
this is going to be one
enormous doll.

______________
Also, this evening
DH & I attended the
"Our Big Fat Greek Festival"
and enjoyed the beautiful autumn evening outdoors
with Greek food, music, and Ouzo!

9-20-2013 Tinking

This past week at "Sit & Knit"
I've been 'tinking' a sweater in progress
to release and reattach the sleeves.
The bright yellow color of the yarn
makes me smile.

9-17-2013 GB#3

GrandBaby #3
...it's a girl.
Woo-hoo!!!!

9-16-2013 Ahhhhh....Water

This may not be the most exciting photo
to lots of folks,
but it sure is to me!!!
All day yesterday/Sunday
we had a slow, soaking rain...
the first precipitation we have had
in over 47 days
(three of those weeks were at or above 100*F)!!!
I took this photo Sunday evening
after it had rained/sprinkled all day.

Elsewhere in the country (Colorado)
folks are dying from deluges
of Biblical proportions!
Thoughts and prayers go out to those who are suffering.

9-15-2013 Church Pipe Organ Pipes

The church pipe organ pipes
had some cousin pipes
come to visit this weekend!
I love bagpipes in churches!!!!!!!!!!
(Wonderful acoustics)
Such joyful, toe-tapping music!
I'll be dancin' a jig all week long.

9-14-2013 Taming of the Slough

Formerly held in the Sylvan Slough
in Moline, IL...
this year it moved to Campbell Island in East Moline, IL.
My S-I-L participated in a 3-man team,
took the hand-off of the timing chip
from the kayaker (3.8 mi.)...
and did the second leg of the race
(8.3 mi.) of mountain biking
in under 40 minutes...
before handing off the timing chip
to the runner (2 mi.)
for the third and final leg of the race.

It was a beautiful morning to be out by the Mississippi River!

9-13-2013 Another Friday the 13th

Happy 14th month birthday
dear grandson!
Love you to pieces!!!

It was so nice outside today
that I took your cousin
to the ballpark
to run off some energy...

After finding some clover to pick on the outfield
we went home for a 2 hour nap!

I love the clover in her little fist!
I found them all over the house
for the rest of the day.

9-12-2013 A Trip to the Park

With a return of seasonable outdoor temperatures,
GD & I decided to enjoy the cool down
and head to the park!
It's been over a month since we've played outdoors
because of record-breaking high temps around 100*F
for the past 3 weeks.

9-11-2013 Remembering

9-10-2013 Drought again?

Three weeks of 100*F temps
and 42 days and counting
with NO precipitation.

9-8-2013 WOW

In addition to browsing through the Beaux Arts Fair
in downtown Davenport this weekend,
DH & I
went to the Figge Art Museum
to view Buddhist Relics
of the "Loving Kindness Tour" exhibit
that is touring the world right now.

DH & I thought it was kind of funny...
an oxymoron:
"Buddhist Relics"
as Buddha taught non-attachment/letting go...
and not to hold other people or things as sacred...
("If someone tells you he is the Buddha, spit on him!")
yet that is exactly what this exhibit is doing...
revering/regarding as worthy of great honor
former Buddhas!

This is one of those things that make you go, "Hmmmm?!?!?!"
I wonder if the Buddha is spinning in his grave?

9-7-2013 Wisconsin Sheep & Wool Festival

This weekend DH & I made the drive
to Jefferson City, WI
to attend the Wisconsin Sheep & Wool Festival.

Watching the spinners do their thing
is like watching magic
to someone like me who doesn't know how to spin
(yet).

I know there is a spinnning wheel
at my LYS
so I may give it a whirl
one of these days.

I need another hobby
like a need another hole in my head! ha.
