6-29-2015 The Fog Comes...

The Fog comes
on little cat feet.

It sits looking
over harbor and city (and corn fields)
on silent haunches
and then moves on.
~Carl Sandburg

This morning
DH & I sat on our front porch
sipping our morning cups of java
and watched the fog roll in over the corn field
across the street from our house.

Within a few minutes
the fog had covered the corn field
snuck across the street
and moistened our cheeks and hair.
It felt like the living thing it was.
And, reminded DH of Carl Sandburg's poem (above).

6-28-2015 Chestnut Street Inn Celebrates 10th Anniversary!

On our way home from Chicago
DH & I stayed at the Chestnut Street Inn
as our dear friends Jeff and his wife Chef Monika
celebrate their 10th anniversary as InnKeepers.
Their wonderful rooms,
gracious hospitality
and spectacular food
keep us coming back!
Congratulations, you two!
Cheers to the next 10 years!

This weekend's themed meal was
"Wraps from around the world."
You know you're going to have a good meal
when your place setting has this many forks!!!

Here is one of the five wraps. Mmmm...

And for breakfast the next morning,
her famous Chestnut coffee and a bird nest!

6-27-2015 Happy Birthday Grandsons!

Today my awesome D-I-L hosted a joint birthday party
for my two grandsons
(one born mid-June... one born mid-July).
She had a Dr. Suess theme
with a bounce house
and a delicious catered meal
for all the family and friends.
Thanks so much for inviting us!
What perfect weather for the party!!! :*)

Here is the teddy bear I made for my 1-year-old GS...
(every stitch with love,
and lots of purple since Oma loves purple!)

And here is the toy box that Opa made for him...
(I neglected to get a pix of it after it was stained/finished.)

6-26-2015 LuLaRoe

I bought this LuLaRoe dress for my GD
for the upcoming 4th of July weekend.
She has worn it for 3 days straight...
does not want to take it off.
She calls it her "Twirly Dress."

Little sister is helping Oma sweep the front porch.

6-24-2015 New Appliances

These relatively simple devices
for performing the task of waning and drying
my clothes for the past 20+ years
are on their last legs...
so, it's "Out with the old...

 ...and in with the new!!!"
Washing machines and dryers sure have changed
over the last 2 decades!!!
These are the simplest ones we could find
and they are still FULL of bells and whistles
and computerized everything.
They actually play music!
(Haven't figured out how to turn that off yet!)
It will take me months to figure out how to use them, ha.

6-23-2015 Playhouse

It only took DH & me about 7 hours
to assemble this awesome playhouse...
the GDs played in it all day long when they came over.
The oldest one (3) kept saying,
"Papa, thank you, thank you, thank you!"

6-22-2015 Meanwhile...

Back at home
while we were on vacation,
the GDs picked strawberries and beans from Papa's garden
and took care of kitty...
(Oma taught me how to shake the leaves
because the strawberries are hiding underneath!)

...stayed cool eating popsicles on Papa's arbor bench...

...and GS#2 started walking!!!

GS#2 is on the right...he just turned 1 year old
while we were on vacation.
Happy Birthday, dear one!

6-21-2015 Impressions

Thinking back over our experiences in the Wisconsin Dells area,
we had a wonderful time,
but we have no desire to return
and do anything over again
except maybe to hike around Devil's Lake again.
It was spectacular!

Also, we would probably choose a different hotel next time.
On our vacation to California years ago
we stayed at Holiday Inn Express
exclusively
and were VERY pleased with
the facitilites, the staff, the breakfast, housekeeping, locations.
So, when we saw online that
there was a Holiday Inn Express
in the Wisconsin Dells area, we thought,
"Yippee! Let's stay there!"

When we arrived,
it looked like an old converted Super 8.
We were informed that they had
a water main leak
(DH & I always have THE worst luck with hotels!)
and had to move us to a different room.
Outside in the hall
industrial heaters and fans were blowing (loudly) 24/7
the entire week we were there
to dry out the drywall and rooms
on all the floors, and of course,
right outside our room.
Also, we seemed to be the only patrons in the hotel.
But, I'm thankful we had a room at all
and a place to lay our heads each night.
video

The hotel lobby/breakfast room
had folding card tables instead of real furniture
but I'm thankful we at least had a place to and eat.

Our guest room keys would not work
on the outside doors to get into the hotel
so we had to come in through the lobby's open front door
and walk all the way to the back of the building
to our room.
To get OUT of the building,
you couldn't just push the door handle to open the door,
you had to bend over and push a lever down by your knees
to open the door to go out.
It was rather annoying.
But, I'm thankful that we were in a secured place.

We stayed for 6 nights.
Room service came by only twice.

Only 6 of the 20 jets
in the OVER-heated hot tub worked.
The sign said it was 103*F
but it was sooooo hot you could not get into it!
I've made a LOT of homemade bread in my lifetime
and heated water to 110*F for the yeast
and know what 110*F feels like when I put my hand in it,
and this hot tub was W A Y hotter!
DH & I had been looking forward to relaxing
in the hot tub after our long days,
but could not, due to it being toooooooo hot,
yet, I am thankful that we at least had a
cold swimming pool in which to relax and play
and the end of our days.

So, all in all,
we would choose a different hotel/resort next visit
to the Wisconsin Dells area.

6-20-2015 Two For The Road

Well, as much as I hate to say it,
vacation has come to an end
and it is time to hit the road home.
DH & I stopped in Bella Goose Coffee House
and got two Lavender-Mint Mochas for the road.
Mmmmmmm....
I cannot even describe how delicious these are.
The coffee shop makes their own syrups
and shared with us how they did it
so we can make some for ourselves at home.
Thanks so much Bella Goose Coffee House!

On the road back home,
we stopped at the Baraboo Arts Festival on the city square.
I found two cute deconstructed/reconstructed tunics
to go over my new
LuLaRoe leggings.  :*)

A bit further  down the road
we ran into a storm
and drove in rain the rest of the way home.

6-19-2015 Science Center, Lost Canyon

Today
DH rode a bike on a cable
12' off the ground
at the Tom Bartlett Exploratory Interactive Science Center...

walked through a replica of the MIR space station...

had lunch at the Brat House Grill...

and spent the afternoon exploring
the slot canyons of Wisconsin Dells Lost Canyon
by horse-drawn wagon...

then we enjoyed riverside dining and
ate a wonderful Mexican meal for dinner

And yes, we topped off the meal with a fried ice cream!!!
Mmmmmm....

Then we played one final 18-holes of mini golf at Pirates Cove
before heading back to the hotel.
DH beat me by 7 strokes!
