to find Rod's truck sitting in the garage

Drove back home across Iowa today in heavy fog...

stopped in Iowa City for lunch with DD & SIL. :*)

2-4-2012 Winter Storm

DH & I looked at our schedules

and decided to drive to Nebraska

to visit family and friends this weekend...

and 4 hours from home

we drove right into a winter storm...

and landed in the center median of I-80...

A Highway patrolman picked us up

and took us to a nearby Super 8 motel

(a warm and cozy shelter in the storm)

where we stayed for 2 days...

...waiting for it to stop snowing

and for the highways and shoulders to be plowed,

after which the towing ban was lifted...

Our car was towed from the ditch

and appeared undamaged and drivable

as far as we could tell...

so we drove to our friends' house in Iowa

(we never made it to Nebraska

where they got 12+ inches of snow!)

before turning around and driving home.

Before we left for home, Saint Steve

marked/blessed our car with the cross of Christ

to protect us on our journey home...

We took the car through the car wash when we got home

to remove the thick layers of road salt

and lots of mud from our spin into the ditch.

We can no longer SEE the cross

but we know it is still there...

just like the sign of the cross on our foreheads

from our baptisms...

can't see them... but know they are there...

a reminder that we are God's beloved children!!!

is a little creature who lives

underneath the house

and when things go missing

(pens, keys, notes, etc.)

I know the Borrowers are using them

and when they are finished

they return the items

which I am then able to find again!

and taste samples and make purchases

from many fine chocolatiers...

after which DH & I toured the QC Botanical Center

the obligatory waterfall with koi pond...

and the resident turtle, named Tortuga, which had buried itself

to get away from the large crowds!

I bought this sock yarn this past October

because it reminded me of all the beautiful colors of autumn.

I started knitting them after Christmas 2011

and just took them off the needles today.

They fit perfectly!

Today I attended a knitting class

at the new Knit & Knot Yarn Boutique

(see post on 1-18-2012).

We started a "Gathered Scarf"...

and I'm using an alpaca/silk blend that feels as smooth as butter

and has a wonderful sheen to it!

I plan to work on it at the Wed/Fri night "Sit & Knit"s...

I have a variety of knitting projects

on my needles at all times...

Projects that need bright morning light, fresh eyes, good concentration,

skinny yarn and needles, and complicated patterns

(like the orange and brown socks)

get done in the morning...

Things less complicated

(like the lavender baby sweater and blue/orange slippers)

get attention in the afternoon...

While mindless/no pattern necessary items

(like the gray alpaca cowl)

are knit while talking with my husband

or watching TV in the evening.

No idle hands here!

I spent today at church along with many others,

re-purposing used items for missions.

Old/gently used mens shirts

have their labels removed

and collars cut off...

...while others iron bias tape to sew around the neckline

to create 'hospital gowns' and girls dresses...

Others tear old sheets into strips

and wind them into rolls that are used for bandaging

in areas experiencing natural disasters...

Donated fabrics

are tied into blankets...

(which is what I did all day)

Young and old alike

moved by God's love

to help those in need.

Cabin fever is setting in

so today DH & I took a road trip

to Kalona, Iowa

to check out their Amish Cheese House...

They make 221,000 pounds of cheese a day...

except Thursdays/today...

due to a lack of milk from the suppliers...

just our luck!

But they still had lots of cheese to sample and purchase

in their cheese shop

so we bought some cheese curds

which came highly recommended by our SIL...

and dropped some off at our DD & SIL's place

on our way home. :*)

I hope is was a nice surprise for them!

of my cuff-to-toe socks (Harvest Dew pattern)

and I'm ready to start the heels.

I've read that adding nylon thread as you knit

the heels and toes

adds reinforcement in those areas

so may give it a try.

Makes me ponder...

what areas of my life need reinforcement?

So DH & I went down to the Mississippi

to check if the eagles have arrived yet.

freshly popped 'cakes' from wheat and brown rice

to take our son out for his (belated) 'birthday lunch'

at the Rock Bottom Brewery.

After lunch, he took us over to see

the eye care practice that he purchased recently.

(choc. cupcakes stuffed with fudge and cherries)

before driving back to the QC.

Harvest Dew

is the name of this socks pattern

that I have begun to knit for myself

using some German wool/yarn of autumn colors

from the LYS (Local Yarn Shop).

It's the first time I've knit socks from cuff-to-toe

(I usually knit 2-at-a-time on 2 circular needles

from toe-to-cuff)

and used the elongated stitch...

so this pattern will provide new learning experiences!

Today our precious daughter and son-in-law

who are 22 weeks pregnant

invited us to attend their first ultrasound!

We got to see the regular and 4D (real time) ultrasound images

of our first grandchild due May 2012

and we also found out the gender of the baby!

After living in our guest room for the past 6 months

while doing 4th year pharmacy school rotations here in the QC,

our DD is moving back to Iowa City today

to finish up her last several rotations

before graduation with her doctorate in May 2012.

We will miss her smiling face around here

but I know her husband in Iowa City

will be happy to have her back home!

Also... finished the Hello Kitty doll

by deciphering a Japanese pattern!

I'm proud of myself! :*)

to decipher the pattern

for making a Hello Kitty doll.

I think I've figured out

most of what I need...
