Started a Mystery Dishcloth Knit-A-Long today

using some of the cotton yarn

from my M-I-L's stash.

Each day the moderator gives participants

a few more lines of instructions

from the pattern

so one does not know what the design

will look like until it is finished.

Fun.

More sub-zero temps...

at least they are during the night

instead of during the daytime!

This winter has been brutally cold...

almost temps me to become a snowbird!

Things are slowly starting to warm up.

Normal temps this time of year are in the 40's.

2-17-2014 Another 7 Inches

Mother Nature

dropped another 7" of snow today

for a record breaking total of 53.67 inches this winter.

DH & I ventured out into the storm

to run a few errands

and hit the grocery store...

...and then I stayed inside the rest of the day

and made a cherry pie for DH's birthday tomorrow!

2-15-2014 No Parking

DH & I went to the QC Symphony

evening performance

tonight.

We had one heck of a time finding 

a parking place

and wondered what else was happening downtown

to fill up the parking garages.

It turned out to be Roller Derby!

2-13-2014 Valentine's Dinner

Inspired by Chef Monika's cooking classes

and watching "The Chew" on ABC,

my DH suggested that we

cook a meal 

together

for Valentine's Day.

Since we have plans tomorrow and this coming weekend,

we pulled out our "Emeril LaGasse" Cookbook

and made our Valentine's Dinner tonight:

 A plateful of yummy Emeril deliciousness!!!

 Homemade Vanilla Custard 

with macerated berries and orange liqueur

for dessert.

And fantastic white wine

from a local Iowa vineyard!

We decided this was so much fun

we may do it every Valentine's Day

from now on!

a surprise in the (snail)mail...

some hand-crocheted booties for my new GD

and a hand-knit alpaca cowl for me

from/made by my dear friend in Maine!

Thank you SOOOOOOOOOOO much!!!

It has been a bitterly cold winter here in Iowa this winter

so your loving gift will keep me (and my GD) warm

and I will think of you each time we wear them!

on the pipes coming from the roof...

Tonight

it was great to see and hear them again!

2-8-2014 Thrumming Alpaca

Today I finished knitting the cuffs for the mittens

and am ready to start knitting 

the main body of the mitten

so I'm spending the morning

making alpaca thrums.

2-7-2014 Opening Ceremonies and LYS Knit Olympics

During the beautiful Opening Ceremonies

for the 2014 Winter Olympics

in Sochi, Russia this evening

...my LYS

began a "Knit-Olympics"...

The project: "Thrummed Mittens".

We casted on our mittens

during tonight's "Sit & Knit" session

and we have 2 weeks until closing ceremonies

to finish our mittens!

Since I made a pair of thrummed mittens last year

and my husband LOVES how warm they are,

I've decided to make another pair... for him...

using black wool yarn and black/brown alpaca thrums

to match his black coats and jackets:

Most of the other knitters are making white mittens

and using the colors of the Olympic rings

for the thrums
