8-22-2016 Hike to Mendenhall Glacier

 After whale watching this morning,
our Hawaiian guide Kim took us on a hike
in the sub-arctic rain forest
to see the Mendenhall Glacier.

unpollenated...have white tips
pollinated...all purple

beautiful lichen and moss everywhere

 Twenty years ago
the edge of the Mendenhall Glacier
was at the waterfall on the right.
DH touching ancient ICE AGE ice...

What a beautiful sight!

8-20-2016 Skagway to Juneau ~ Whale Watching

Coming into Juneau this morning...

docked at Juneau...

the boat for our morning whale watching excursion
is at the end of the blue ramp...

The boat for our whale watching excursion...
love it!!! It is covered/has a roof
and windows that open up to the inside
so we won't be totally exposed to the pouring rain!
Guaranteed to see whales
or your money back...woo-hoo!!!
(Other excursions were not so lucky...
they had boats open to the elements.)

DH and our guide Kim (from Hawaii)...

 our captain, Fred...

We saw these humpback whales about 50 years from our boat!!!
They were "bubble net feeding"...
something that according to our guide Kim,
less than 100 of the 20,000 humpback whales worldwide
know, or have learned how to do.
Though as I  read about it on the www
it seems they commonly do it.
We got to witness it FOUR times!!!

Another interesting story with a humpback...

8-19-2016 Grandson of the Founder of the Iditarod Race

The Grandson of the founder of the Iditarod Race
came onboard last evening
and brought puppies for to pet
while he gave a slide presentation
about the importance of mushing in Alaska.
Folks in the "lower 48" have no idea
how important mushing is to survival in this harsh climate!

8-18-2016 Coming Down from White Pass

Coming down from the White Pass
we saw
some blue sky for the first time on our trip,
beautiful mountains,
several lakes,
a desert,
and Alaskan hospitality for lunch
at Caribou Crossing.

Getting some love from Iditarod race puppies!

Emerald Lake...

Tormented Valley again on the way down...

and here come the clouds again...

Finally back down in Skagway
and perusing the shops...found this awesome
woodworking shop!

Time to head back to the ship
after a day of adventure!

Our balcony view at sunset.
