We left my house at 9:30 a.m.
and arrived in Liberia at 10:00 p.m.
Then we had an hour and a half drive
thru mountains
in the pitch black night
to get to our resort on the Pacific Ocean.
We had a lengthy delay and LONG line of traffic
at one point
where road crews were doing some work.
They work on the roads during the night
because it is too hot to work during the day.
(They are right on the equator.)
While we were sitting and waiting, I asked the shuttle driver
about the large fires we saw as we were landing.
He said those are the sugar cane fields on fire.
They start a fire in the center of the field around 5-6 p.m.
to push out to the edge all the venomous snakes and rodents
and to burn off the razor sharp leaves of the sugar cane
so they don't cut the workers.
Then, about midnight, after the fires have burned down,
the workers,
(Nicaraguans that the Costa Ricans hire for all the hard work...)
go into the sugar cane fields
and cut the cane one by one with machetes.
Finally, we arrived at our destination,
checked in at the open air lobby,
and opened the door to our room at
2 minutes after midnight (12:02 a.m.) the next day (3-8-2018)!
