Finished this scarf this morning.
:-)

2-27-2013 Minding the Store

The LYS owner
is home with her sick baby
so I volunteered to mind the shop tonight.
We welcomed a new (to the area) knitter
to "Sit & Knit" and enjoyed
getting to know her!

2-26-2013 Needed

Much needed precipitation!!!

Iowa is still suffering from last year's drought.
They say every 10-12" of snow = 1" of rain...
we got 4-7" of snow, so not even 1" of rain...
but I'm so thankful for every drop we get!

2-25-2013 Bad Mood

Nothing puts DH in a bad mood
quite like having to do plumbing repairs!
(Think blood boiling & cuss words, folks!)
After functioning properly for 6 1/2+ years,
the toilet started running
so several days ago he replaced all the parts...
and it was fixed for 2 days.
Now it is running again!
So, this is his second attempt.
Poor dear!
Anyone else hate plumbing?

2-24-2013 No Better Way

There is
no better way
to spend a Sunday afternoon
than attending
one of Ahreum Han's
pipe organ concerts!!!!!!
We are sooooo blessed to have her
here in the QC!
Thank you for sharing your amazing talent with us...
a fore-taste of heaven!

2-23-2013 Ow

Neighbor kitty came to visit...
look at it's front left leg.
:-(

2-22-2013 Thrummed Mitten progress

working on finishing up my thrummed mittens...
all I have left is the thumb on mitten #1...
and I plan to start mitten #2 tonight
and the LYS's "Sit & Knit" session.
The 'poofs' of wool on the inside
will felt together
from the warmth, moisture, and friction
of my hand as it wears the mitten.
Should be nice and warm for the next Iowa winter!

2-21-2013 Mystery Ami

Can you guess what this is going to be?
I need to download a Russian font
and find a Russian to English translator online
to decipher the rest of the pattern!
Anyone out there know Russian?

2-20-2013 Any Takers?

The label on my head
says I only cost $14.00.
Any takers?

2-19-2013 BSJ

2-12-2013 King's Cake

Traditionally eaten on January 6th,
King's Cake
has become my sweet indulgence
for Shrove (Fat) Tuesday & Mardi Gras!
It takes about 4 hours to make
(like all yeast/rising breads)
and is a labor of love to DH & myself.

While the dough is rising
I drain the cherries and dry them with a paper towel
and make the cream cheese filling...
 After the dough has risen
I press it out to the shape of a large rectangle...
...spread the cream cheese filling down the center...
...put drained and paper-towel-dried tart cherries
on top of the cream cheese filling...
...fold the dough over the filling and pinch it shut...
...wrap it around a can on a baking sheet,
twisting it as I go...
...then let it rise again for another 30-45 min.
before baking until golden brown...
...then I remove the can from the center,
let it cool to room temperature,
and top with a powdered sugar glaze
and some colorful gels or sugars...
I purchased green, yellow, and violet gels...
but I'm thinking the violet looks more blue than purple!
Oh well... still looks festive
and tastes yummy!
Happy Shrove Tuesday & Mardi Gras!
Now, where's my knife, fork and plate?!?!?
Mmmmmmm.....

2-10-2013 Mardi Gras

Yesterday we received a wonderful surprise in the mail
from a dear friend in New Orleans...
an envelope full of Mardi Gras beads, bracelets,
and King Cake dolls.
Thanks sooooooo much, Greg!
(You sure didn't need to do that.)
I hope you enjoy and use
the little surprises I sent to you!
Give your mom a hug from us
next time you see her!

2-9-2013 Red Crow Grille

DH made reservations for tonight
to celebrate Valentines Day,
his birthday,
and our upcoming anniversary!
Dinner was absolutely delicious!
It was the first time we have gone to this restaurant
since we moved here 6 years ago,
and will probably be another 6 years
before we can afford to go again! ha.

Afterwards
we attended the QC Symphony Orchestra's performance of
'Invitation to the Dance' by Weber,
'West Side Story Symphonic Dances' by Bernstein,
'Waltz' from Swan Lake by Tchaikovsky
...and the vocal music group
performing swing-era favorites.

2-8-2013 March KAL

My LYS (Local Yarn Shop)
usually has a KAL (Knit-A-Long) each month.
For March, the KAL is Bunnies!
Perfect for Spring/Easter!
Since I love making small dolls
I got some yarns with pastel hues
and have started my creations.
There is a knit version
and a crochet version...
I plan to make them both! :*)

2-7-2013 Annoyed

Am I the only one who gets annoyed
at having to buy Swiffer mop
replacement wet mopper cloths?

A while back when I ran out of the refills
so I began putting a bowl of water (and Pine-Sol)
in my kitchen sink
and then dunking an old dishcloth into it,
wringing it out a little,
and attaching the washcloth to my Swiffer mop.

Then I started thinking that maybe I could knit or crochet
a mop head 'refill' from cotton yarn
and found this pattern online...
something I can use and throw into the washer
after I have cleaned the floors.
I folded over and stitched the first side
without 'trying it on' my mop...
oh well...
I think it will still work.

2-6-2013 Walking

My sweet granddaughter
has started walking at 9 months...
just like her mommy did!
She's headed for her favorite place to sit:
the cat's bed!

2-5-2013 Local Alpaca

I'm using some local (not dyed) alpaca
to knit this Robin Hood Hat...
but am trying to knit it in reverse.

2-4-2013 The Smell of Sawdust

DH picking out wood
for some upcoming projects...
mmmmm...
I love the smell of sawdust!
No, really, I do!!!

2-3-2013 Super Bowl in New Orleans

Since no one at our daughter's Super Bowl party cares
which team wins
(Baltimore Ravens vs. San Fran 49ers)
we decided to go with a
New Orleans theme...

I brought Gumbo Ya Ya...

and Beignets...

Mmmmm...
It was the first time I've ever made them
and they were awesome
hot out of the fryer!

DD provided the red beans & rice
some "Hurricane" cocktails
the television on which to watch the game
and the pleasure of her family's company!

Thanks so much for inviting us over for the big game!

2-2-2013 Emeril Lagasse's Gumbo Ya Ya

Today I made the rue...

and homemade chicken broth...

and base...
for Chef Emeril Lagasse's
Gumbo Ya Ya
(recipe was in last Sunday's newspaper)...
to be finished and served tomorrow
at my daughter's Super Bowl party!
I figured since it was being played in New Orleans...
I'm just sayin'...

2-1-2013 Perfect Morning

IMHO, this is the perfect way to start every morning...
coffee in my Aidan cup, and some 'fiber' (cotton!)...

YAY, it finally got above 0*F !!!
But, it's still gray and dreary...
think I'll go knit some more!
