10-27-09 Misc.

An inspiring hedge of burning bushes along my jogging path this morning (5.25 miles @ 39*F!!!), and an inspiring blue sky (after a week of rain!!!), and a reflection from DH's water glass at lunch, and a chocolate sheet cake I just baked for a funeral lunch at church tomorrow... now to go cook the frosting...

10-26-09 Goat's Milk

As outdoor temperatures dip and indoor furnaces fire up,
I find myself at the beginning of "Dry & Itchy Skin Season!"
For the past several Iowa winters, the only thing that doesn't
make me itch is Goat's Milk soaps and lotions...
so I did some shopping today
in the Village
with our new pastor's wife
to get prepared for the coming winter!

10-25-09 Seeing Red!

This is the Sunday that Christians of the Lutheran faith tradition celebrate the Reformation that Martin Luther brought to the church years ago. Red flowers, altar cloths, banners, etc. let people in church know that we are celebrating something special. Today we also confirmed 5 young ladies, and installed our newly called Pastor. Dear husband did all the cantor-ing, as neither of the pastors present can sing!!!

10-19-09 Groceries

Other than my morning run, this was my excitement for the day... a trip to the grocery store for broccoli, cauliflower, apples, lemons, carrots, spices and milks for pumpkin pies for Thanksgiving (still no canned pumpkin in the area grocery stores), some lunch and dinner meats, and saving the best for last... Whitey's Peppermint Ice Cream with Dark Choc. Sauce!!! MMM!

10-18-09 Beauty Berry

While out doing yard work, I noticed that our Japanese Beauty Berry Bush is LOADED with gorgeous purple berries!!! In this photo, they look more redish/purple than they do in real life... actually they look more blue/purple, or primary purple. I bet they would make a beautiful natural dye!!!

10-17-09 New Mattress

Today, it was "Out With the Old, and In With the New!"
Since DH and I are BOTH starting to have backaches, we decided to ditch our 20+year old double pillow top mattress (in the top left pix) for a new one. We are trying a latex foam rubber mattress for the first time and have 30 days to try it/sleep on it. If we decide we don't like it, we can exchange it for a different one (an inner spring/coils one that we also liked).

10-16-09 Butternut

Received this beautiful (HUGE!!!) butternut squash from a friend at church who grew it in her garden. Thank you for such a delicious and nutritious gift!!! You are special. And DH and I will enjoy EVERY BITE!!!

10-15-09 Martinis @ Putnum

Tonight DH and I were invited by several choir members to attend "Martini & a Movie" night at the Putnum Museum this evening (and every 3rd Thursday of the month). Ticket prices (very inexpensive!) included one martini, unlimited
hors d'oeurves, bananas Foster, and an IMAX movie about Vincent Van Gogh (different movie each month)! What a fun evening we had!!! Now that we know about this, we plan to attend more often! Afterwards, we invited the choir members over to our house for several rounds of Mexican Train Dominos. Now it's time to hit the sack! G'night!

10-14-09 Octet

Instead of singing every Sunday at the early (8:30a.m.) worship service as usual, our choir director (?) has decided that an octet from the choir should also sing at second service (11:00a.m.) every Sunday with a rehearsal between the services to learn a new song for second service (...instead of just singing the choir anthem we sang at the first service and already know).
I sing soprano in the choir and was "appointed" to be in the octet for second services. I did NOT volunteer, as I am not too keen on the idea of being there from 7:30 a.m.-noon every Sunday (and neither is anyone else in the choir), and having to miss the Adult Forum/Sunday School. Argh!!! What to do?!?!? What to do?!?!?
So, today, I took a pix or our stack of choir music (7 on the right side...and we still don't have any Christmas pieces yet!) for first service, and the booklet & CD for second service music (on the left side) I am heading to choir practice shortly to see how everyone else is feeling about this. It doubles our weekly time commitment for choir from 3 to 6 hours... which I think is a bit much for a small country church choir, IMHO.

10-14-09 Fall Colors

Today DH and I went shopping for a new mattress for our bed.
I forgot to take a pix in the mattress store.
We also went to the college to buy tickets for the Christmas Choral Concert,
and I forgot to take pix of that.
We also went to see an art exhibit of Andy Warhol photographs
and we were not allowed to take pictures of those...
so thought I would post this pix of Fall Colors
which won't be around much longer because of the recent frosts and snow.

10-11-09 Inspiring!

DH and I watched this little guy hitting hockey pucks...
he can ice skate more smoothly than I can walk...
must have been doing it since he was little...
practice makes perfect...
he was very inspiring to me...
motivates me to keep on keeping on...

10-10-09/A First Snow!!!

10-10-09/B Eagle Point Park

After a week of cold, gray, rainy weather, DH and I have a bit of cabin fever, so we decided to go exploring and check out another new (to us) park in the area. It was fun, even tho it was snowing. The beautiful fall colors in the tree leaves were breathtaking!

10-10-09/C Wide River Winery

After exploring Eagle Point Park, DH and I went searching for... and found... Wide River Winery. After a bit of wine tasting, we settled on two bottles to bring home for Thanksgiving Dinner: a white wine named "Harvest Hurrah" and a red wine named "Pursuit of Happiness."

10-9-09 New Makeup!!!

I just received my new makeup in the mail the other day
and am excited to experiment with all the different "looks"
they have created in the booklet which accompanies the makeup!!!
YAY! I love playing in makeup!
And I LOVE, LOVE, LOVE Bare Escentuals!!!

Sometimes when I think about it, the whole concept of makeup is weird. I will not leave the house without it, but it is probably because I have been brainwashed by this culture that I need it to look more beautiful... or more importantly, to look more youthful. Heaven forbid I should look my age!!! Youth is worshipped in Western Culture... Age is revered in Eastern culture... which one is correct? or are both correct? or neither? Maybe we should hold neither youth nor age in high regard, but just accept each as it is, and just BE. Then I wouldn't need to "put on my face" every morning! (And the makeup industry would go out of business!!!)
...Wait, I DO need it... for the SPF protection!!! Whew!

10-8-09 De-Flowered

Today the weather prognosticators said to expect hard frosts this weekend,
so DH and I did a bit out outdoor winterizing around our home...
I de-flowered my deck flower pots and put them in storage for the winter:

DH went around the house and disconnected all the hoses:

DH replaced the front screen door with the glass storm door:

We emptied the birdbath in the front garden
and stored it in the garage:

DH and I also emptied the water fountain on the deck
and carried it to the basement for the winter:

Hope we didn't forget anything!!! We don't have any leaves to rake yet, so I'm hoping we are prepared for the onslaught of cold weather and Iowa winters!!! Brrrrrrr.

10-6-09 Trail or Treadmill

To run... or not to run...
that is the question...
No, wait...
NOT to run is OUT of the question!!!
Whether 'tis nobler to run in the rain...
or smarter to hit the treadmill indoors...
decisions... decisions...
I think I'll wait until noon to see if the rain clears out.
If it doesn't, I'll go find a treadmill...
It's the procrastinator in me!!!

10-3-09 VanderVeer

DH and I decided that we needed a change of scenery, so we checked out a new (to us) park for our morning jog... lots of pretties here! We may need to take some picnic lunches here next summer! (You can left click on the picture to enlarge it, then left click the BACK ARROW in the upper left hand corner to return to the blog.)

10-2-09 Wisconsin Knife Show

Today, DH and I drove to Wisconsin for a Knife Show (his idea) and we both came home with a new blade! Here is a pix of my cute, little, purple Spyderco! Everyone who knows me knows that I LOVE purple!!!

Also, Evil Twin's Wife was kind enuf to send me five words for the Friday Five, so here they are with just the first thing that pops into my head when I hear these words:
1. Pistachio~ YUM!!! What comes to mind is the many batches of homemade pistachio ice cream I made for the family while the kids were growing up, and the fun times we had sitting around the table together eating it and getting brain freeze!
2. Cliffhanger~ every Friday episode of All My Children... I hold my breath all weekend until Monday's episode to see how they resolve things... been watching that stupid show for more than 30 years!!!
3. Daisy~ immediately brings to mind my BFF because it is her favorite flower from her ordination into the ministry.
4. Pigeon~ poop; The bird lady feeding them in the Mary Poppins movie (I think I can still sing that beautiful song word for word!); Boston, where my DH went to school, and when I went to visit, we walked everywhere we went, and the dang pigeons were everywhere; and finally, the organized Pigeon Shoots we had in downtown Sedalia, MO each summer to get rid of the blasted things!!!
5. Soup~ I prefer homemade, and eat lots of it during cold weather! I have an awesome recipe for chicken noodle soup. I made some of it for a soup supper at church one time, and someone bought a bowl, took it home and fed it to a person at home who was on chemo and had no appetite, and had not eaten for quite awhile, and she ate it all and asked for more! So the person came back and bought a full quart of the stuff. It just blessed me all day! :-)

10-1-09 Chilly!

It is officially "Chilly/Chili" Season...
had to pull out the sweatshirts, jackets and jeans today...
so made some turkey chili
and put it a simmerin' on the stove for supper tonight.

Come supper-time, I think I'll mix up some cornbread and pop it into the oven as well...
